Do You Need to Bring Your EDT Logbook to the Irish Driving Test?
A clear answer for learner drivers, plus the documents and vehicle checks you should complete before arriving at the test centre.
Your Training Record Still Matters
You do not normally need to hand a physical EDT logbook to the driver tester. Your Approved Driving Instructor records your completed EDT sessions electronically, and you can check those records online before test day.
Completing EDT is still compulsory for eligible first-time learner permit holders. The change is about how your training is recorded and checked—not about removing the EDT requirement.

For a Category B car test, check these items well before leaving for the test centre.
Valid learner permit
It must be in date, match your identity and cover the correct vehicle category.
Motor-insurance certificate
Bring valid proof showing that you are insured to drive the exact vehicle being used for the test.
Valid insurance disc
The original disc must be clearly displayed and show the vehicle registration or fleet name and valid policy dates.
Tax and NCT discs
The car must display a valid original motor-tax disc and a valid NCT disc where applicable.
Clear front and rear L-plates
Both plates should be correctly positioned, clearly visible and not badly faded.
A roadworthy test vehicle
Check tyres, lights, warning lights, windows, mirrors, seatbelts, wipers and washer fluid.
Important 2026 insurance-document rule
If you are not named on the motor-insurance certificate, the RSA says you must also provide an email or headed letter from the insurer confirming that you are covered to drive that vehicle. The certificate itself is still required. Digital copies are accepted.

Confirm that all required sessions have been recorded. Resolve any missing session with your ADI before test day.
Inspect every document
Look at the expiry dates, vehicle registration details and your name on the insurance documents.
Check the car itself

Do I need to bring my paper EDT logbook to the driving test?
The RSA’s current practical-test checklist does not list the paper EDT logbook among the documents required for a standard Category B car test. Your required EDT sessions must still be completed and recorded.
How can I check if my EDT lessons are recorded?
Use the RSA’s online MyEDT training-record service. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your learner permit.
What should I do if an EDT lesson is missing?
Contact the Approved Driving Instructor who delivered the session and ask them to check the record. Do this well before your test.
Do I need proof of insurance for my driving test?
Yes. Bring a valid motor-insurance certificate showing that you are insured to drive the vehicle presented for test. If you are not named on the certificate, additional confirmation from the insurer is required.
Do I need to bring my booking confirmation?
Keep the booking details available on your phone so you can confirm the correct centre, date and appointment time. Arrive early and wait inside the designated test-centre waiting area.
Can I use my instructor’s car for the test?
Yes, provided the vehicle is suitable, roadworthy and properly insured for the driving test. Confirm availability with your instructor in advance.
