Learn how to look ahead, anticipate hazards and make better driving decisions before they become emergencies. Discover why planning ahead helps learners pass the Irish driving test.
Remember This
PLAN, DON’T REACT
The safest drivers don’t have faster reactions.
They simply see problems sooner.
Learn how to scan further ahead, anticipate danger and make calm decisions before a hazard develops.
Why This Matters
One of the biggest differences between a learner and an experienced driver isn’t steering.
It isn’t clutch control.
It isn’t gear changes.
It’s planning ahead.
Many learners drive safely until something unexpected happens.
Then they react.
Experienced drivers usually spotted that problem five or ten seconds earlier, adjusted their speed, changed position or prepared to stop long before it became dangerous.
That is exactly what driving examiners want to see.
The RSA driving test assesses your anticipation and observation, not simply how quickly you react when something goes wrong.
Think Like an Examiner
As you drive, constantly ask yourself:
👀 What can I see ahead?
⚠️ What could happen next?
🚗 Who might create a hazard?
🛑 If something changes, what will I do?
If you continually ask these questions, you’ll rarely be surprised.
Look Further Ahead
Many learners only look one or two cars ahead.
Good drivers scan much further.
Instead of staring at the car directly in front, look beyond it.
Watch:
✅ Brake lights several vehicles ahead
✅ Pedestrian crossings
✅ Cyclists
✅ Children near footpaths
✅ Parked cars
✅ Junctions
✅ Traffic lights changing
The earlier you see these, the more options you have.
Planning Gives You More Choices
Imagine you’re driving towards:
A pedestrian crossing.
If you notice someone standing beside it early, you can:
✔ Ease off the accelerator
✔ Check your mirrors
✔ Prepare the brake
✔ Leave more space
If the pedestrian suddenly steps out…
You’re already prepared.
That’s planning.
Not reacting.
Common Driving Test Situations
Roundabouts
Instead of waiting until you reach the yield line…
Start reading traffic long before you arrive.
Look for:
• Speed of approaching vehicles
• Indicators
• Vehicles leaving exits
• Possible safe gaps
Traffic Lights
Don’t only react when lights change.
Ask yourself:
Could these lights change soon?
Should I ease off now?
Can I stop safely if amber appears?
Good anticipation avoids harsh braking and rushed decisions.
Parked Cars
Don’t wait until you’re beside them.
Ask yourself:
Will I need to move out?
Is anything coming?
Could someone open a door?
Could a child appear?
Pedestrians
Watch body language.
Someone looking down at their phone.
Someone standing beside a crossing.
Children near schools.
People walking between parked cars.
Often the clues appear several seconds before they move.
The Biggest Mistake Learners Make
Many learners drive like this:
Hazard appears…
Think…
Brake…
Then decide.
Experienced drivers do this instead:
See…
Think…
Plan…
Then drive smoothly.
The result?
Less stress.
Less braking.
Better positioning.
More confidence.
What the Examiner Wants to See
The examiner isn’t looking for perfect reactions.
They want evidence that you are:
✔ Reading the road
✔ Planning ahead
✔ Anticipating hazards
✔ Making smooth decisions
✔ Driving without being surprised
These are core skills assessed throughout the Irish driving test.
Quick Exercise
During your next lesson, challenge yourself to say out loud:
“I can see…”
“I think…”
“So I’m going to…”
Example:
“I can see brake lights ahead.”
“I think traffic is slowing.”
“So I’m easing off the accelerator.”
This simple habit builds excellent anticipation.
