Fourth Learner Permit Ireland 2026 – What Happens After Your Fourth Permit?
On your third learner permit now? The rules become much more serious at the fourth permit stage.
From 1 November 2026, if you are applying for a fourth learner permit, you must have actually undertaken a driving test in the relevant category within the previous two years.
And the fourth learner permit will normally be valid for one year.
The biggest issue comes after that.
There is no normal fifth learner permit.
If you reach the end of your fourth permit without progressing to a full licence, you may have to restart the learning-to-drive process.
That can mean:
📖 Sitting the Driver Theory Test again
🪪 Applying for a new learner permit
🚗 Completing the full EDT programme again
📝 Applying for another driving test
If you are already on your third learner permit, this is not something to leave until the final few months.
⚠️ Fourth Learner Permit Coming Up?
Find Out Where You Stand Before It Becomes Urgent
You may already have years of driving experience.
You may drive regularly.
You may feel completely comfortable behind the wheel.
But if your next permit will be your fourth, the important question is:
Are you actually test-ready?
Tallaght Driving School can assess your current driving, identify the faults or habits that could cause problems on test day and build a focused preparation plan.

🪪 What Changes With a Fourth Learner Permit?
Under the new rules, obtaining a fourth learner permit requires you to have undertaken a driving test within the previous two years.
Simply applying for a test is no longer enough.
❌ Applied for a driving test?
Not enough.
❌ Have a test booked?
Not enough on its own.
✅ Actually sat the driving test?
That is the important requirement.
You should always confirm your individual eligibility directly with the RSA or NDLS.
⏳ How Long Does a Fourth Learner Permit Last?
A fourth learner permit will normally be valid for:
1 year
That is much shorter than the earlier permits.
And that shorter period matters.
One year can disappear quickly when you factor in:
📅 driving-test waiting times
🚗 lesson availability
🛠️ correcting long-term habits
🧪 mock tests
📄 documentation
⚠️ unexpected cancellations or delays
If you are entering your fourth permit, the sensible approach is to have a plan from the start.
🚫 What Happens After the Fourth Learner Permit?
This is the biggest change.
Under the new system, there is no normal progression to a fifth learner permit.
If you reach the end of the fourth permit and still need to continue as a learner driver, you may have to restart the learning-to-drive process.
That can include:
📖 Theory Test
You may need to pass the Driver Theory Test again.
🪪 New Learner Permit
You may need to begin again with a new learner permit.
🚗 EDT
Where EDT applies, you may need to complete all required EDT sessions again.
For Category B learners, that means the full 12 EDT lessons.
📝 Driving Test
You then need to progress through the test process again.
That is why reaching the fourth permit should be treated as a serious milestone.
🧠 “I’ve Been Driving for Years — I Don’t Need Lessons”
You might not need many.
But nobody can know that until they see you drive.
Long-term learners usually have a mixture of strengths and habits.
You may already have:
✅ strong vehicle control
✅ confidence in traffic
✅ road experience
✅ good judgement
✅ familiarity with local roads
But you may also have developed habits around:
👀 observation
🪞 mirrors
↔️ positioning
⭕ roundabouts
🚦 junctions
📈 progress
⚖️ speed management
🚶 pedestrians
⚠️ hazards
🅿️ manoeuvres
These habits may feel normal because you’ve been doing them for years.
That doesn’t automatically mean they match driving-test standard.
🎯 We Assess Before We Recommend
If you are already an experienced learner driver, you should not automatically be sold a block of lessons.
We prefer to start with a Driving Test Readiness Assessment.
We look at:
👀 Observation
🪞 Mirrors
🚦 Junctions
⭕ Roundabouts
↔️ Positioning
📈 Progress
⚖️ Speed management
🚶 Pedestrian anticipation
⚠️ Hazard awareness
🧭 Planning
🅿️ Manoeuvres
🚗 Independent driving
📝 Test-fault patterns
Then we decide what actually needs work.
🟢 You May Be Closer Than You Think
There are experienced learners who are already close to test standard.
They may only need:
- a few corrections
- better observation consistency
- test-specific preparation
- manoeuvre practice
- a mock test
- confidence under test conditions
In those cases, the answer is not to start again.
The answer is to tighten the gaps.
🟠 Or You May Have Several Long-Term Habits
This is also common.
A learner may drive every day and still repeatedly:
- miss mirror checks
- approach junctions too quickly
- position poorly
- hesitate unnecessarily
- react late to hazards
- overreact to pedestrians
- use the wrong lane at roundabouts
- rely on other drivers to make space
None of these habits necessarily feel dramatic during everyday driving.
But repeated during a driving test, they can become significant.
🔴 Don’t Use the Fourth Permit as a Countdown Clock
The fourth permit is only one year.
That makes the timing different.
You don’t want to spend the first eight months thinking:
“I’ll sort the test later.”
Then suddenly be dealing with:
- a permit approaching expiry
- a test date
- several driving faults
- limited lesson time
- pressure to pass
The better approach is:
Assess early.
Fix early.
Test when ready.
🧭 Plan — Don’t React
One of the principles we use in test preparation is:
PLAN — DON’T REACT.
Safe driving becomes much easier when you recognise situations early.
Instead of reacting suddenly, you:
👀 scan
🧠 anticipate
📍 position
⚖️ adjust speed
🚦 make a decision
🚗 act smoothly
This is particularly important for long-term learners whose driving may have become very automatic.
⚡ React — Don’t Overreact
Another common problem is excessive reaction.
For example:
🚶 a pedestrian approaches the road
🚗 a vehicle begins edging out
🚲 a cyclist appears ahead
🚦 traffic changes unexpectedly
Good driving requires a response.
But not every hazard requires heavy braking, sudden steering or excessive hesitation.
Our principle is:
React. Don’t overreact.
That balance is important on the driving test.
📄 What If My Driving Test Doesn’t Go Ahead?
If a test is not conducted, it may not satisfy the requirement to have undertaken a driving test.
That can include situations involving:
- cancellation
- non-attendance
- documentation issues
- vehicle problems
If you’re approaching a fourth permit, don’t leave your only test opportunity too close to the expiry date.
Give yourself margin.
🔄 Already Failed a Driving Test?
A previous test can give us useful information.
Bring your test report if you still have it.
We can look for patterns such as:
👀 observation faults
↔️ positioning issues
📈 progress faults
⚠️ hazard response
🚦 junction problems
⭕ roundabout errors
Then we compare those faults with what you’re doing now.

That is exactly the type of learner an assessment is useful for.
You may already be close to test standard.
Or you may have several habits that need correcting.
The assessment gives us the answer.
Should I book lots of lessons before my fourth permit expires?
Not necessarily.
Start with an assessment.
Then build the training around what you actually need.
